Making An Impact Annual Highlights

Supporting Community Partners to Improve Health

Working with a network of nonprofit organizations with deep roots in our communities is one of the most important ways our plans help members achieve their best health.

In 2019, Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC) contributed more than $7 million to 86 community partners with Healthy Kids, Healthy Families® grants aimed at advancing nutrition and physical activity, supporting safe environments and preventing and managing disease.

Through our collaboration with Feeding America, 26 food banks in our states reported delivering more than 4.8 million meals. With the American Lung Association, HCSC’s plans have helped more than 200 health clinics improve asthma care quality since 2012.

Improving Access to Coverage and Resources

HCSC’s plans provide health care coverage to more than 16 million people — either through their employer, the individual marketplace, Medicare or Medicaid. However, millions of people in our states remain uninsured or underinsured.

In 2019, HCSC organized a community-based outreach and education campaign to help people identify their options and make informed decisions about coverage for themselves and their families.

Our plans also help people navigate their care and coverage options and access community resources throughout the year, for example with the Blue Door Neighborhood CenterSM in Illinois, Mobile Assistance Center in Oklahoma, and in collaboration with Sanitas medical centers in Texas.

Bridging Gaps in Preventive Care

Transportation challenges and other barriers to routine preventive care can have profound impacts on the health and well-being of our communities.

That’s why HCSC’s plans support Care Van® mobile health programs, working with local health departments and health care providers to bring vital services to schools, churches, shopping centers, parks and community events.

In 2019, the programs helped deliver more than 70,000 vaccinations and 106,000 health screenings and other services to more than 150,000 people in our five states.

Making Connections in Our Communities

Every year, thousands of HCSC employees dedicate time and energy to make a difference in our communities. In 2019, nearly 9,000 employees volunteered more than 175,000 hours of their time — an increase of nearly 30% over the previous year.

Thanks to them, nearly 500 nonprofit organizations earned matching donations from employees logging their time in our Blue CorpsSM program. Employees also contributed nearly $630,000 to the Blue Bear Employee Relief Fund, United Way and other charitable organizations.

Uniting Diverse Talent

We support an environment where all employees feel valued, empowered and recognized for their unique talents, perspectives and differences. HCSC is proud to have received recognition for this commitment in 2019:

  • 100% on the Disability Equality Index
  • America’s Best Employers for Diversity, Forbes America
  • America’s Best Employers for Women, Forbes America
  • Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality, Human Rights Campaign
  • Military Friendly® designation, Bronze Status

Caring for Our Environment

HCSC is committed to sustainable practices like recycling, waste reduction, renewable energy use and responsible food sourcing. In 2019, we recycled nearly 3.4 million pounds of paper, saving 29,000 trees, 5,000 cubic yards of landfill space, 11.9 million gallons of water and 647,000 gallons of oil. HCSC also participates in CDP — which helps companies, cities, states and regions manage their environmental impact — and 48% of our electricity comes from renewable sources.
