CHICAGO — Health Care Service Corporation announced the third anniversary of its expanded Maternal and Infant Health Initiative, highlighting investments and partnerships supporting healthier outcomes for moms and babies across Illinois, New Mexico and Texas. The initiative aims to improve the health of moms and babies by increasing focus on access to quality care, reducing resource and care gaps and supporting families across these states.
Maternal health and preterm births remain critical issues in the United States. According to the 2025 March of Dimes report, the U.S. maternal mortality rate stands at 18.6 deaths per 100,000 live births, while 16.1% of women lack adequate access to prenatal care.
"As we celebrate another year of the initiative, we are proud of the impact we've made through our partnerships," said Dr. Angela Moemeka, HCSC's chief medical officer for government programs. "Our commitment continues as we help moms, babies and families access the care, resources and services they need to achieve healthier outcomes."
Since its 2023 expansion, the initiative has delivered meaningful results in strengthening maternal health resources and services across the communities HCSC serves, including:
- Serving more than 670,000 people through community and clinical partnerships specialized in maternal health services.
- Screening for nearly 400,000 for sexually transmitted diseases and cervical cancer among preconception and prenatal patients.
- Distributing more than 9,000 prenatal vitamin bottles through community partners.
- Helping program partners deliver more than 9,300 healthy babies.
HCSC has invested more than $25 million to advance maternal and infant health. The initiative is helping address maternal health challenges through sustained investment and collaboration. Learn more about HCSC's maternal and infant health impact in its 2025 Impact Report.
