HCSC Celebrates Two Years of its Expanded Maternal and Infant Health Initiative

CHICAGO — Today, HCSC celebrates the two-year anniversary of its expanded Maternal and Infant Health Initiative. The initiative aims to improve the health of moms and babies through partnerships that address factors that influence the health and wellbeing of women, children, and families, including addressing the social determinants of health. Through its health insurance Plans in Illinois, New Mexico and Texas, the initiative focuses on increasing access to quality care, reducing care gaps, and supporting local maternal and infant care.

“This marks an important milestone as we celebrate two-years of our commitment to improving the health outcomes for the moms and babies,” said Yolanda Lawson MD, Executive Medical Director, Maternal and Infant Health at HCSC. “We look forward to supporting families at every stage of life and that starts with maternal care. HCSC is committed to driving positive change for maternal and infant health, and championing its advancement every step of the way.”

Since its inception, the program has demonstrated measurable success across the communities HCSC serves, including:

  • More than 284,000 people served through community and clinical partners with specialized maternal health services.
  • Nearly 176,000 preconception and prenatal patients screened for sexually transmitted diseases and cervical cancer.
  • Distributed nearly 21,000 prenatal vitamin bottles to community partners for distribution.
  • More than 5,600 healthy babies were born through program partners.

Efforts also include investment in maternal health workforce development, including doulas and midwives to reduce perinatal disparities.

HCSC recognizes the meaningful impact of its community partners and the expertise they bring through collaboration and trust. Their work helps to eliminate barriers to care from preconception through postpartum and is vital in creating lasting change in maternal and infant health.
