HCSC’s Dr. Monica Berner Named One of Modern Healthcare’s 50 Most Influential Clinical Executives

CHICAGO — Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC) is proud to announce that Chief Clinical Officer Dr. Monica Berner was recognized by Modern Healthcare as one of the 50 Most Influential Clinical Executives for 2023.

This program honors licensed clinicians in executive roles who are deemed by their peers and the senior editors of Modern Healthcare to be paving the way to better health through their executive responsibility, leadership qualities, innovation, community service and achievements inside and outside of their respective organizations.

“The 50 clinical leaders we’ve recognized started as physicians or nurses, and regardless of their titles today, that strong foundation of caring for patients has benefited their organizations and communities,” said Mary Ellen Podmolik, editor-in-chief of Modern Healthcare. “These executives are broadening access to care through expansion and embracing digital tools to make their operations more efficient and their patients more connected. They also are tackling workforce challenges by developing strategies to attract newcomers to the field. Modern Healthcare’s 50 Most Influential Clinical Executives are helping propel the industry forward.”

Dr. Berner has spearheaded the development of multiple HCSC initiatives and innovations, and leads responsibility for the health insurance company’s clinical policies, accreditation, quality improvement initiatives, and care management strategies for its more than 17 million members. Last year, HCSC identified members in need of services relating to cancer, immunizations, diabetes, cardiovascular care, behavioral health and maternal and infant health and connected with patients or providers about the perceived gaps. It also announced that it would offer its virtual primary care model to some employer groups in Illinois and Texas in 2023.

“Dr. Berner works diligently to ensure that our members and customers have access to the tools and interventions they need to improve health outcomes," said Opella Ernest, M.D, Executive Vice President, HCSC Commercial Markets. "She is an exceptional example of commitment to HCSC's purpose and I am proud to celebrate this honor with her and our entire company.”
