First Cost-Saving Generic Medication From CivicaScript™ Available to HCSC Members

CHICAGO — Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC) is advancing its commitment to provide access to cost-effective, quality care by giving members access to the first cost-saving generic medication in its partnership with CivicaScript. The medication, a generic form of abiraterone, is available starting Sept. 1, 2023.
Abiraterone is a specialty drug used to treat prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. The 250 mg version of abiraterone was chosen as a priority generic medicine based on the high list price from other manufacturers, and significant patient need for the product.
The retail price of the brand name version of abiraterone is $13,064 per month [1]. The retail price of CivicaScript’s abiraterone generic is $171 for about a month’s supply. The amount HCSC members will pay is based on specifics of their plan design and pharmacy selection.
“This marks a key moment in our relationship with CivicaScript and our overall drive to bring down pharmaceutical costs for our members,” said Jill Firch, HCSC senior vice president of pharmacy. “The cost of medications needs to be sustainable for HCSC members. With CivicaScript, we now deliver access to innovative generic medications that will accomplish that goal.”

CivicaScript also is working with sister company Civica, Inc. and numerous partners to bring affordable insulin to market. The organization was created to bring affordable versions of high-priced generic medicines to market and work with payors, PBMs, and pharmacies across the country that pass along the cost savings to their customers. HCSC is a founding member of CivicaScript.
