Manika Turnbull Accepts New Role as Vice President, Community Health and Economic Impact Officer at Health Care Service Corporation

Health Care Service Corporation looks to build on deep tradition of workplace diversity and inclusion as company begins search for next D&I chief 

Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), the nation's largest customer-owned health insurer, today announced Manika Turnbull, Ph.D., has accepted a new role as vice president, community health and economic impact officer, HCSC. Paula Steiner, HCSC president and chief executive officer, and Nazneen Razi, Ph.D., senior vice president and chief human resource officer, will commence the search for a new chief diversity officer (CDO) to succeed Turnbull. 

The new CDO will report to Razi and will oversee the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI), ensuring diversity and inclusion remain cornerstones of HCSC’s culture. This individual’s focus will include continued integration of best practices into business operations while building a highly talented workforce that is representative of the communities the company serves.

Turnbull oversaw HCSC’s CDI for more than three years, expanding the company’s inclusive practices and employee training, business resource group participation, youth STEM outreach and minority- and women-owned procurement opportunities. Under Turnbull’s leadership, HCSC also stepped up its efforts to identify, recruit and hire under-represented candidates. These efforts have earned HCSC recognition as a Military Friendly Employer, best place to work on the Disability Equality Index and a number of other national and regional recognitions.

In the newly created role, Turnbull will report to Joel Farran, senior vice president, chief brand officer, HCSC, and will have responsibility for developing strategies and creating alignment across ongoing community and civic investment efforts in partnership with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield® plans HCSC operates in Illinois, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

Turnbull’s accountabilities will include establishing community initiatives and investments as part of Affordability CuresSM, HCSC’s commitment to pursue long-term solutions to an expensive health care system. Initial focus areas include social determinants of health and behavioral health, as well as substance abuse community resources.
