Health Care Service Corporation Named One of America’s Best Employers for Diversity

HCSC listed among companies honored by Forbes for commitment to an inclusive workforce

Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), the nation’s largest customer-owned health insurer, was honored as part of Forbes’ first-ever America’s Best Employers for Diversity list, which recognizes companies for their employer diversity policies, as well as diversity among executives and board members. HCSC operates Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans in Illinois, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Montana and has more than 21,000 employees across its five states.

In its 2017 Diversity & Inclusion Annual Profile, HCSC highlights that 61 percent of its management positions are held by women, and 30 percent are held by people of color. More than 3,200 employees are engaged in Business Resource Groups (BRGs), which play a key role in developing business solutions, strengthening the company’s talent pipeline and enhancing community partnerships. In addition, the company prioritizes diversity and inclusion awareness and education through regular communications and events and carries its commitment through to business suppliers.

To develop the list, Forbes worked with research firm Statista to survey 30,000 employees at companies with workforces larger than 1,000 and asked questions around diversity, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability and age. The firm also analyzed the gender breakdown of each company’s boards and management teams, if the company proactively communicates about inclusion and differences in employees’ perception of the organization’s diversity.
