Through the Healthy Kids, Healthy Families® initiative, we target partnerships and programs that offer direct preventive services to help stop disease or illness before it occurs. We also educate our communities on how they can avoid encountering certain health issues and provide resources to better manage their health situation once disease or illness occurs.
The Care Van® program program is one of our pillar partners in preventing disease across our company’s five states and consists of mobile health vans that travel to underserved communities providing access to free preventive services and screenings to children and adults. A Care Van program is currently being developed in our company’s newest Blue Plan, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana, and will begin providing services in 2014.
Since the start of the program in 1990, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois' (BCBSIL's) two mobile Care Vans have canvassed the state providing more than 232,000 free immunizations. One of BCBSIL's Care Vans has also had a reoccurring presence at the Illinois State Fair, where working in collaboration with the St. John's Hospital of Springfield, thousands of seniors have taken advantage of free cholesterol and glucose screenings.
Established in 2006, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) Care Van program, in collaboration with the New Mexico Department of Health and other health care providers, including the University of New Mexico's Medical School and Eastern New Mexico University's nursing school, has provided more than 12,000 immunizations and performed thousands of screenings statewide.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma is the leading sponsor of the Oklahoma Caring Foundation, Inc., and its signature Oklahoma Caring Van program, which provides immunizations at no charge to children through clinics held at child care facilities, schools, social service agencies and other community locations. Two vans are based in Oklahoma City to serve the central and western parts of the state, and two vans are based in Tulsa, serving eastern Oklahoma. A fifth Caring Van is operated in partnership with Choctaw Nation Health Services to serve ten counties in the rural southeastern part of the state. Established in October 1999, the Oklahoma Caring Van program has provided nearly 240,000 immunizations to over 127,000 children.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) is the statewide sponsor of the Caring for Children Foundation of Texas which operates ten Care Vans in collaboration with the Texas Medical Association, Texas Medical Association Alliance and other organizations across the state. Beginning in June of 1997, the Caring for Children Foundation's Texas Care Van program has given 1,106,391 immunizations to 700,000 children.
